How to ride Cherriots buses
Where and When
First you'll need to know where and when to catch
the bus to get you where you want to go. Call our information
specialists at 588-BUSS (2877) and they'll give you the information
you'll need. They can send you free maps and schedules to help.
You'll be surprised by how easy it is to get to a Cherriots bus.
Our Customer Service office and adjacent Downtown
Transit Mall are located at 220 High Street NE in downtown Salem.
How To Pay Your Fare
If you're using cash, simply deposit the correct fare in the
fare box. Heading into town, you pay your fare when you get on
the bus. If you're getting on the bus while heading away from
downtown, you won't pay your fare until you get off the bus. It's
even easier to use pre-purchased tickets, punch cards, or monthly
passes.
Day Passes
Day Passes are available for twice the cost of a single fare,
and allow the rider to ride all routes, all day, as often as wanted.
Day Passes are available from the drivers and at Customer Service.
Bus Stops

The Cherriots operate on a marked bus stop system. Red and white
bus stop signs are located at convenient intervals along routes. The
signs are marked with the bus route numbers that stop at that
spot. Buses stop to either board or unload riders at the
marked locations. Just look for the red and white signs,
and check to make sure your route number is on the sign -- the
bus operator will take it from there! Cherriots buses stop
at all bus shelters, too, even if a sign is not present.
Approaching Your Stop
It's simple to signal the operator when you've arrived at your
destination. there's a rubber strip along the inside of the bus,
near the seat, which will sound a bell when pressed. the operator
will stop at the next bus stop when he/she hears this signal.
You're on your way!
On The Bus
We ask for your cooperation on a few things which help make riding
the bus an enjoyable experience for everyone.
Please,
- Do not eat on a Cherriots bus - drinks in a sealed container
are OK.
- Refrain from smoking.
- Don't play radios or tapes --headphones are OK.
- Have exact change if you're paying cash -- drivers carry
no change.
- Offer your seat to an elderly or disabled person.
Cherriots Stations
The Courthouse Square transit facilities are roomy, well-lit,
and comfortable. The layout below shows where each route's
bus parks in the R.G. Andersen-Wyckoff Transit Mall at Courthouse
Square. Buses depart from these locations at :15 and :45
after the hour. Departure is controlled by special traffic
signals, and once the bus doors close they can't safely be opened
again to board passengers.
Please plan to board your bus prior to the scheduled departure.
We have thousands of people using the mall each day, and ask that
several rules be observed for the comfort and safety of everyone:
. .
Please, no smoking in any of the Courthouse Square transit
facilities . . .
Use the marked crosswalks to cross the bus travel lanes . .
.
Persons using the bike racks on Cherriots should walk their
bikes along the pedestrian areas . . . No scooters, skateboarding,
or roller skating in any of the Courthouse Square transit facilities.
