Microtransit Feasibility and Implementation Study

Microtransit Feasibility and Implementation Study

Over the next several months, Cherriots will be conducting a study to evaluate whether microtransit is a service that could expand transit options in underserved communities within Salem-Keizer Urban Growth Boundary (UGB).

What is Microtransit?

Microtransit is a technology-enabled, on-demand public transportation service that uses smaller vehicles (vans or shuttles) to offer flexible routing options instead of operating on fixed schedules or routes. Microtransit services typically operate in zones and are designed to bridge gaps in underserved communities where fixed route services do not currently operate, or service times are limited. Microtransit typically uses a mobile app where passengers can book shared rides in real time within designated areas.

Goals for the Study

Improve transit services. Provide an app-based on-demand service using smaller vehicles "modernizing the transit system" and improving mobility for currently underserved communities within the Salem-Keizer UGB.

Determine the feasibility of implementing a microtransit service. Identify current service gaps and unmet transit needs where microtransit could improve accessibility to key destinations and the transit network. Potential benefits of microtransit include enhanced service flexibility, reduced wait times, expanded coverage to underserved areas, and improved connectivity with existing transit routes.

Identify Operations Model(s). Provide Cherriots with microtransit service delivery models that identify service type, fleet size, and delivery method.

Community Input. Gain community input regarding interest in utilizing microtransit service.
