Cherriots has been awarded a $3.5 million grant for new electric buses

SMART Transit Electric BusWe are excited to announce that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded Cherriots an FY2020 Low-No Emission Vehicle Program grant for $3,573,581. This competitive grant will allow the District to purchase five (5) battery-electric Gillig buses as well as the acquisition, construction, and installation of required supporting infrastructure.

One of the District’s strategic goals is to be an environmentally responsible organization and the acquisition of battery-electric buses helps support this priority. This will allow us to test battery-electric buses and decide if we will purchase additional batter-electric buses in the future.

This is a highly competitive grant program and thanks go to the team who prepared the application for submittal; your hard work paid off. We will now begin the bus purchase process and work with Salem Electric to install charging stations at Del Webb. Look for more information on how we will deploy these buses once they arrive on property.
