Restroom remodel at the Downtown Transit Center

We're using the closure of the Customer Service lobby to improve restrooms

Though the lobby is closed and Cherriots employees are working from home, the Facilities Maintenance crew have kept busy.

Cherriots has budgeted for a full public restroom refresh for years, however, it never seemed like the right time because the project would involve closing the restrooms, leaving riders with few options. In comes COVID-19. As soon as the lobby was closed, Michael Taylor, the newly hired facilities maintenance supervisor, leapt into action to begin the project.

The project includes replacing all fixtures, hardware, and partitions, refinishing the floors, and adding slanted mirrors to allow better wheelchairs access. Taylor made the decision to source all of the hardware and fixtures from a locally owned hardware store that has been in business for more than a century, in an effort to do our part to help the community survive the economic hardship that COVID-19 has brought to small businesses. Aside from the partitions and floor resurfacing, all work is being done in-house by the Facilities Maintenance crew.

Being a father himself, Taylor knows how hard it can be to find somewhere to change your child, so for the first time Cherriots restrooms will now have changing tables in both restrooms.

In addition to the bathroom refresh, the Facilities Maintenance crew has painted the entire lobby and customer service area. They will soon finish painting the driver break room, and move onto the driver restrooms.

Be sure to thank a Facilities Maintenance worker next time you see one for the great work they’ve done during the pandemic.
