New Fareboxes Are Coming!

We are upgrading our fareboxes on all Cherriots Local and Cherriots Regional buses to improve reliability and speed up the boarding process.

The transition begins on June 2, 2026, but you may see new and old fareboxes across the system as we work on installing the new fareboxes.

1. Paying with Cash or Coins

The new fareboxes will continue to accept cash.
Exact change is required, as operators do not provide change.

2. Day Passes

If purchasing at Customer Service: You will receive a Umo QR token. Please note that this QR token is designed for the Umo reader, not the new farebox.

If purchasing on the bus: The new farebox will print you a paper pass with a QR code that is designed to be scanned on the new fareboxes.

3. 30-Day Passes

We are transitioning away from magnetic stripe (magstripe) passes, as they won't work with the new fareboxes.
To upgrade, bring your old magstripe pass to the Customer Service Lobby at the Downtown Transit Center (220 High St. NE, Salem). Our Customer Service staff will exchange it for a Umo tap card, free of charge.
To ease the switch to Umo, we are waiving the $3 card fee (June 1 - August 31).
